Our business revolves around producing top quality livestock, whether cattle, sheep or deer, which are capable of achieving high levels of production in a low intervention, forage-based system. We are dedicated to taking the nonsense out of livestock farming. To this end, we strive to breed stock which are born easily, grow quickly and have the constitution to thrive on forage alone and bounce back quickly if times get tough.


We value time as a precious commodity, for our customers and ourselves, so can guarantee that all breeding stock that reaches the point of sale will have had no assistance at the point of birth, will not have had assistance to suckle or have had any foot trimming carried out. We also sell all our stock un-dressed and with minimal, if any, concentrate feed throughout their lives.


Annually we hope to offer shearling rams, draft ewes, commercial ewe lambs, bulling heifers, stags and yearling hinds for sale.

Over the years we've learnt a lot about breeding and producing the type of sheep that are capable of performing well in a low intervention, forage based system. We've worked hard on both breeds to improve lambing ease, maternal ability and foot/leg structure. we now consider them true dual purpose sheep.


Born in April, out-wintered on forage alone at nearly 1,000 feet and turned out for sale on a grass rotation, these rams are bred and conditioned to perform in any system. Expect these rams to cover 70-80 ewes each, even in their first season and possibly more as mature rams.

After selecting our own herd replacements and filling an existing order, we find ourselves able to offer a group of lovely yearling hinds for sale. They are mostly daughters of our foundation Strathdon hinds, and sired by top Woburn, Strathdon and Annan Water sires. They are recently drenched and can be bolused here at Pirntaton before movement. Please also see the video of the hinds below.


With demand for Farmed Venison set to increase dramatically, now is a great time to think about getting into the industry or increasing your existing herd.

These seventy five ewes are all six year old, and fully warranted (correct mouths and udders). They are more than capable of another year or two of production on kinder ground than here at Pirntaton. Sired by top Wairere Romneys and the best of our own maternal Texels, as well as the last of our hill Cheviots, they would fit into any system and have been lambed out-doors every year. They are pictured here running at almost 1,400 feet where they have been running since weaning time.


A second lot of 35 ewes which are only correct below, but a mixture of four and five year olds, are also available.


They are all vaccinated for enzootic and toxoplasmosis abortion and are on the Heptavac-P system with next booster due next spring.

After fulfilling existing orders we have a further lot of fifty from our annual draft of ewe lambs for sale. They will be a straight cut of the entire group. These gimmering, or running lambs are mainly sired by top Wairere NZ Romney or Thistleyhaugh Lleyn rams and out of our heavily selected "maternal" flock of commercial ewes. We can guarantee that these lambs were born and suckled without assistance in our outdoor lambing system, and with a great number of them being triplets and gimmer twins, offer the chance to secure some of our most productive bloodlines.

We are again pleased to be acting as a Scottish base and point of sale for Wairere UK and now have a second strong selection of shearling rams to sell direct from pirntaton. These genetics are one of the cornerstones of our commercial ewe flock and we can't recommend them highly enough.

We are delighted to offer our second draft of two year old Stags for sale. Retained off the very top of our 2019 calf crop, their herd mates averaged a whopping 69.5kgCW when processed in early October last year. These retained stags had September 2020 weights of up to 179kg. Bred from two and three year old Strathdon hinds and sired by top quality Woburn and Strathdon stags, these genetics are bred to peform. The stags were all used to rut yearling hinds, which scanned at 100%, last year and have only been supplementary fed for a month following this. As with our sheep and beef programmes, we're keen to find out which genetics can give us top performance on limited inputs.
