PIRNTATON FARM

Pirntaton lies in the beautiful Moorfoot Hills, halfway between Edinburgh and the Borders town of Galashiels and is situated in the renowned livestock producing “Galawater Valley”. The total area of the farm is 630ha (530ha effective) with about a quarter of the land being classified as Rough Grazing. Rising to 1,700 feet above sea level, around 90% of the farm lies at over 1,000 feet. Almost 100 Ha of the farm is covered by woodland with a significant proportion of this being planted in 2019/20.

System

Our farming system is now based on growing and then utilising as much home-grown forage as possible, with robust, efficient, low maintenance livestock. This has allowed us to keep cost of production low whilst significantly increasing output. Rotational grazing and forage crops have been introduced to minimise reliance on purchased feeds. Overall production has been lifted from 290-550kgLW/ha (for our sheep and beef systems) whilst purchased concentrate use has been reduced by up to 90%.

Performance

A huge emphasis is put on recording and monitoring performance of both our livestock and our pastures. Sheep are all EID tagged, weighed at regular intervals and the stud flocks are performance recorded. Pasture is measured with a rising plate-meter up to every fortnight during the peak growing season. Livestock performance, pasture measurements and cropping plans are all fed into Farmax software to enable informed, data driven decisions to be made.

"There is a world of science, progressive farming methods and expertise out there, but it takes talent, vision and hard work to put it into practice.

The team at Pirntaton have shown they possess these three attributes, having turned a traditional upland pedigree breeding farm into one of the UK’s leading commercial units."

Our History

Our history

EVOLUTION

Over the years the main enterprises on the farm have changed and evolved. In the recent past Pirntaton was home to the well-known Galawater Aberdeen-Angus Herd, with the highlights being, selling Galawater Bentley for 28,000gns in 2010 and winning the Overall Championship at the famous Perth Bull Sales with Galawater Bold King in 2007. Bentley has still achieved amongst the top ten prices paid at auction for any Aberdeen-Angus bull.

Reputation

Pirntaton was also home to noted flocks of pure-bred Scotch Blackface, Texel and Suffolk sheep with many highlights in both the show and sale ring. We were particularly proud to win both the Championship and Reserve in the Blackface section of the Royal Highland Show in 2010. Texel and Suffolk shearling rams were regularly sold amongst the highest averages at the famous Kelso Ram Sales for many years.

The future

With an eye on the future, focus has now moved toward more commercially driven, forage-based livestock systems and the production and sale of genetics capable of top performance within them. We have also introduced a large herd of Red Deer to the enterprise mix. These changes recently helped us win the coveted Farmers Weekly Sheep Farmer of the Year Award for 2019.
